The Youth Arm of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) recently paired its Youth Uplifting Community activity with its parent arm’s 80th Anniversary celebrations in a random act of kindness exercise that recognised a few of the Union’s retirees.
They were randomly chosen from a pool of retired members who were either 80 years young or approaching their 80th birthday within the year, in conjunction with the BWU’s milestone celebration.
The Youth Arm, represented on separate occasions by President Akiel Alleyne and BWU Staff delegates Shakeda Williams and Cameron Layne, visited the select seniors at their homes and gifted them with COVID-19 care packages aimed at boosting and preserving a healthy immune system and providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to aid in the fight against this pandemic.
It was a great way for the Youth Arm to put their stamp on the celebrations, while acknowledging the contribution of those who have sacrificed, endured, fought, paved the way and laid the foundation upon which the BWU now stands. In this war against a global pandemic it is paramount to give back, protect, and preserve these foundation layers and by extension the Union’s retired members.
Their conversations, though centred around COVID-19 and getting right with God, were quite motivating as they gave some insight into the secrets of looking young and staying healthy into the golden years.
This act of volunteerism will not end here. The expressions of gratitude and encouragement for the Youth Arm members to keep in touch with the seniors in the community were a welcomed outcome and will be continued.
